The Cedar Glades
Math & Science Connection
Second Grade
Your child will be studying the Cedar Glade during the next 6 weeks in Connections. Cedar glades (also known as limestone glades) are open, grassy, rocky natural areas surrounded by red cedar trees and other trees and shrubs. Many glade plants are endemics – rare plants that are found only in cedar glades. Others are found in the glade but also grow in other areas. This natural area deserves our care and protection, as they are all national and global treasures. (Flatrock Glades: Cedar Glade Plant Guide for Elementary Students: MTSU)
We will begin with an environmental study. The students will learn about dichotomous keys and will begin to create one with some of the trees on school property. They will learn about plants, habitats, and animals. Dr. Kim Sadler and Marrie Lasater will also be guest speakers during our unit of study.
The students will complete a research project with a focus on a plant from the Cedar Glade. Your child will need to purchase and bring to school a tri-fold board with their name on the back. These can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or Walmart in any color. We will begin work on the project October 24th.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. You will be receiving more information during the time of the connection. My email address is [email protected] . I am looking forward to working with your child.
